AllerGen Annual Report
2016/2017

AllerGen NCE Inc. is hosted at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. AllerGen NCE Inc. is supported by the Government of Canada through the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program. Created in 1989, the NCE program is a joint initiative of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (formerly Industry Canada).

Corporate Profile

AllerGen NCE Inc. (AllerGen), the Allergy, Genes and Environment Network, is a national research network whose mission is to help Canadians address the challenges of living with asthma, allergies, anaphylaxis and related immune diseases.

AllerGen was established in 2004 by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (formerly Industry Canada) through the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Program.

For more than a decade, AllerGen research teams have generated new knowledge; advanced drug development; built a solid foundation for significant health discoveries; forged a strong national and international research and knowledge-sharing network in allergy, asthma, and anaphylaxis; and expanded related research and clinical training opportunities to nurture a new generation of leaders in the field.

In 2016-2017, AllerGen received $5,216,500 in funding from the NCE program. Through strong partnerships and investments in research and innovative capacity-building programming relevant to partners and stakeholders, AllerGen secured additional non-NCE funding at the ratio of $1.84 to every NCE dollar received.

2016-2017 Network Performance
"At-a-Glance"

Message from the Board Chair & Scientific Director

AllerGen is pleased to present its 2016-2017 Annual Report, which highlights the Network’s accomplishments and impacts over the past year.

2016-17 was a year of considerable progress towards the achievement of performance milestones across AllerGen’s investment portfolios—research, commercialization, knowledge mobilization and capacity building. These Network accomplishments are the result of an extraordinary degree of collaboration, and level of commitment and expertise, among Network participants from across disciplines and sectors.

Working with 3,500 Canadian children and their families, CHILD Study researchers published important findings this year, including:

  • babies breastfed longer are less likely to wheeze, lowering their risk for developing asthma;
  • exposure to furry pets in early life may protect against childhood allergies and obesity; and
  • delayed introduction of allergenic foods may increase the risk of allergic sensitization.

Such findings, among many others published by AllerGen researchers, help us to understand the links between early-life exposures and long-term health and wellbeing.

2016-2017 Impacts

AllerGen’s Integrated Research Program

AllerGen has been transforming the Canadian allergy and asthma research, training and innovation landscape since 2005.

Led by internationally recognized Canadian researchers with transdisciplinary expertise, the Network’s 34 active research projects and strategic initiatives aim to generate new knowledge; advance diagnostics, treatments and prevention strategies; and lay the groundwork for significant future discoveries to improve the quality of life of Canadians living with allergic disease.

Network Partners, Collaborators and Knowledge Users

As a national research network, AllerGen research teams work with industry and community partners, and research receptor organizations across academia, industry, not-for-profit and government sectors. Together, they ensure that the Network’s scientific findings bridge the gap between the research lab and real life, to benefit Canadians living with allergic disease.

Commercialization

Clinical trials leadership brings international investment

AllerGen’s Clinical Investigator Collaborative (CIC) was founded in 2005 to advance the development of new therapies to treat asthma.

From innovation to commercialization

AllerGen helps its Network investigators to maximize the impact of their projects and to fill the gap between conducting research and developing a product or tool that can improve the lives of Canadians. In 2016-17, AllerGen supported six Network projects with their intellectual property (IP) and commercialization activities.

Tomorrow’s Leaders: AllerGen’s Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP)

AWARDSSNAPSHOT

Training the next generation of leaders and researchers in allergic disease is one of AllerGen’s most impactful achievements.

AllerGen’s HQP training program has increased Canada’s research capacity, launched the careers of talented young investigators and clinician-scientists, and produced highly employable graduates working in diverse sectors.

Since 2005, AllerGen has provided education, training and capacity-building opportunities to 1,493 trainees, research staff and early career professionals. The Network invests $500,000 annually in capacity-building programs that provide skill acquisition and development opportunities beyond the traditional training and mentorship provided within research projects.
